MANILA, Philippines -- The country’s workers will enjoy a five-day respite this Holy Week, one of the longest official breaks this year, since President Macapagal-Arroyo announced in 2001 that she would apply “holiday economics” in the Philippines.Through Proclamation 1211 signed in January, Malacañang declared April 7 (Black Saturday), which is sandwiched between MaundyThursday, Good Friday, Easter Sunday and Bataan Day (April 9, Monday), a special non-working day to “give our people full and uninterrupted opportunity to ponder on the significance of the Holy Week.”Workers will enjoy another three-day weekend in June—from the 9th to the 11th. The proclamation declared June 11 (Monday) a non-working holiday, and Independence Day, June 12 (Tuesday), a working day. This year, there will be three four-day weekends: from Nov. 1 to 4, from Dec. 22 to 25 and from Dec. 29 to Jan. 1, 2008. Dec. 29 and 30 fall on a weekend, while Dec. 31 is a special holiday as it is the last day of the year.In 2001, the President approved two four-day weekends to allow Filipinos to enjoy the Christmas holidays. She said the break would also boost local tourism. The original plan was to have an 11-day holiday, but it was discarded after some sectors warned against the disruption of business.
